Magyar Telekom Group is the first company in Hungary's corporate sector to announce that it is launching a pilot program to test the four-day working week. In a pilot scheme, four teams worked four days a week for four months at an unchanged basic salary. The project proved to be effective, and the company will continue the test period until the end of August 2023, with the inclusion of additional areas.
The test period of the four-day working week in the Magyar Telekom Group ended at the end of October, with the main objective of gathering information. The pilot program, which started with 150 people, involved 4 teams: customer service, technical troubleshooting, technology sales support and SAP systems. In addition to smooth work organization, the project focused on feedback and morale of colleagues.
"Building on international experience, we found that three consecutive days off make work and leisure time more balanced, improve colleagues' quality of life and enable them to perform more effectively in the workplace with well-coordinated work organization. The direct experience of the 4-month trial period and the nationally representative survey have provided a wealth of information on the benefits of the new working arrangements, the issues raised and the expectations of the labor market. The test period has been a success, and we will continue the pilot, doubling the number of colleagues involved, expanding it to other areas and exploring new aspects, until the end of August 2023. In addition, we encourage labor market actors to join the experiment, according to their own possibilities," Chief People Officer of Magyar Telekom Zsuzsanna Friedl said.
Surveys conducted during the pilot phase of the four-day working week show encouraging results: the performance of employees working fixed hours on customer-facing tasks relative to themselves increased by 10 percent compared to their performance before the pilot after the introduction of the four-day working week test period. An internal survey of the colleagues involved showed that 92% of staff who took part in the four-day pilot felt that they had enough time for their personal life in addition to their work and at the end of the pilot period 90% said they would like to continue working four4 days.
Seeing the results, Magyar Telekom will continue testing the four-day working week, from February 1, 2023 onwards, by involving additional teams, doubling the number of participating colleagues and extending the testing period to six months. In the second phase, the company will continue the project with a 36-hour working week, with no change in pay and maintaining the current level of efficiency, and will examine the impact of the four-day working week on recruitment selection, employer brand, and will also analyze the evolution of turnover within the test teams and possible changes in sick days.
