Disaster management authorities were alerted 3,700 times over the week-end and Monday morning. A spokesman for the National Directorate General for Disaster Management says people were also injured as trees fell on two cars.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) has warned that daytime highs could be around (or above) 40 degrees Celsius for the rest of the week, especially on Friday. Accordingly, a heat alert has been declared for the entire country until August 4.

Temperature reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale) in Budapest this Monday afternoon, followed by a severe storm late at night. Southeast Hungary experienced even higher temperature: 38 degrees Celsius (101 degrees F).

A second-degree heat alert has been issued for Hungary by Deputy State Secretary Tamás Szentes, who also acts as Chief Medical Officer.The waring is effective to midnight next Monday based on a forecast by the National Meteorological Service.

Budapest heat record broken

The daily heat record for June 10 in Budapest was broken by more than two degrees Celsius this Tuesday as 36.3 degrees were measured in the northern part of the capital. According to the weather forecast, the heat is to decelerate on Thursday, the earliest.
