Over the past year (August 2022 to July 2023), an average of 30,000 users per month have used the MOL Bubi bicycle rental service in the Hungarian capital. Bubi 1.0 (the system operated between 2014 and 2020) had an average of 3,500 users per month, an increase of eight and a half times.
"Wherever you walk on the streets of Budapest, it's no exaggeration to say that a Bubi passes by almost every minute. Stations in outlying areas are often empty, so you can assume that people use them to get to work in the morning," the business news site napi.hu notes.
"As the monthly season ticket is offered at a fairly reasonable price - the first 30 minutes of cycling each time is free of charge – we also wanted to know the ratio of people who cycle on a season ticket to those who cycle on a per-minute basis," it adds.
"On average, the proportion of users with a season ticket is 80 per cent. This high figure is also due to the fact that a significant proportion of users live, work or study in or around Budapest; they are the ones who should opt for a monthly or annual pass. The MOL Bubi is part of the capital's public transport system and the aim is to provide an affordable service for local residents, as reflected in its affordable pricing," the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) told the news site.
Since its relaunch in May 2021, the fleet has more than doubled in size (from 1,200 to 2,460), with 900 more bicycles in the past year alone. According to BKK, in the current funding situation, no further growth is expected for the time being, but the company is looking at ways to further develop and expand the system.
