The U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, has been killed in the second largest Libyan city of Benghazi in an attack by Islamist rebels. His car was reportedly attacked, killing him and two bodyguards. a fourth US citizen also died in Benghazi.

Hungarian Foreign Minister János Martonyi held talks on closer cooperation with Libya and Hungary's involvement in post-war reconstruction in the Libyan Tripoli in mid-December. Hungary would like to actively join in the reconstruction of Libya.

The Hungarian government has issued a manifesto welcoming the resolution of the United Nations Security Council, passed on March 17, that aims at putting an end to aggression against the civil population in Libya.

An aircraft operated by MALÉV Hungarian Airlines transporting 96 evacuees (Hungarians and other nationals) from Libya touched down safely at Ferihegy international airport in Budapest shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday evening.
