EU suspends over EUR two bn funds for Hungary

The European Commission has suspended the payment of funding in three priorities of Hungarian development programmes totalling about EUR 2.3 billion. Hungarian officials say a correction of up to 10% can be expected, adding that this amount will not necessarily be lost.

Civilian groups distributed food to the poor in Miskolc this Tuesday, partly to defy the city’s mayor who refused the Child Nutrition Foundation’s similar initiative at Easter. The event turned into turmoil as the needy basically ransacked the food stands.

Following a month-long investigation, Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) has busted a huge illegal cigarette factory in co-operation with Europol (the European Police Office). In the February 2 raid, 22 tons of tobacco were seized.

Jenõ Buzánszky, the last surviving member of Hungary's formidable 1950s national football side, the Golden Team, died at the age of 89 after a long illness this Sunday. He was elected as one of the 12 'Athletes of the Nation' in 2011.
