Hungarian engineer Sándor Tarics, who won gold at the 1936 Olympics as member of the Hungarian water polo team, passed away in his home in Belvedere, California in the United States. He celebrated his 102th birthday last September.

Being an Olympic champion is a great achievement by itself but Tarics managed to surpass even that in civil life. His 1995 patent 'composite seismic isolator' revolutionized the construction of earthquake-resistant high-rise buildings.
