Spectacular St. Stephen's Day fireworks

The traditional St. Stephen’s Day fireworks were launched this Friday evening from ships on the Danube, two bridges – Chain Bridge (Lánchíd) and Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd) - and from Gellért Hill to be watched by tens of thousands of people on either banks of the river.

Chess grand master Judit Polgár and composer Péter Eötvös have been recognized with the Order of Saint Stephen, Hungary’s highest state decoration. The decorations were handed over in the presidential Sándor Palace on August 20, Hungary’s national holiday.

Tourism figures keep improving in Hungary

In June 2015, more than 1 million guests spent 2.5 million tourism nights at Hungarian accommodation establishments. The number of guest and tourism nights grew by 6.7% and 4.9%, respectively, year-on-year. Occupancy ratios also increased.

The embassy of Afghanistan in Budapest closed effective July 1, citing austerity reasons, the Hungarian news agency MTI quoted the online news portal hvg.hu. The website said the information had been confirmed by Hungary’s foreign ministry.
