Huge bomb removed from the Danube in Budapest

Technicians of the Hungarian military removed a 500-kilogram US bomb, hidden under water since WWII, from the river Danube near the Rákóczi Bridge in southern Budapest this Wednesday. The area was closed down for the duration of the operation.

Hungarian President János Áder, the Patron of this year's Budapest Water Summit has issued a special stamp for the occasion. Designed by artist Anita Laczkó; the miniature sheet with a face value of HUF 400 depicts water droplets forming a unique bird.

The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra has announced "with deep sadness" that its musical director, Zoltán Kocsis died Sunday afternoon "after a long illness borne with dignity" at the age of 64. He underwent heart surgery in 2012.

A policeman was shot dead in north-western Hungarian village of Bõny on Wednesday, The Hungarian news agency MTI was told that the suspect in the case, a 74-year-old man, was being treated at a hospital in the nearby city of Gyõr.

Hungarian extremist sentenced to 13 years in prison

A Budapest court has sentenced in a non-binding ruling extremist György Budaházy to 13 years in prison for carrying out terrorist activity almost a decade ago. He and six of his accompliceswere placed under house arrest Tuesday afternoon.
