The presidium of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (HOC) has resigned unexpectedly and quietly, index.hu says quoting a report by the sports daily Nemzeti Sport.
The current president, Krisztián Kulcsár and the presidium took office on May 12, 2017. According to the HOC charter, the organization holds a general assembly meeting (where the agenda includes the election of leading officials) within 90 days of the end of the Summer Olympic Games, but no later than December of the given year.
As the Tokyo Olympic Games, originally scheduled to be held this summer, has been postponed, observers say the likely reason for the resignation of the president and the presidium is to conform to this rule under the present unexpected circumstances.
"The members of the presidium of the Hungarian Olympic Committee made a joint decision to resign, because in the current circumstances this seemed to be the most obvious solution," András Szabó, HOC's head of communications, wrote to the sports daily, adding that the general assembly meeting will be held in the first half of the year to give the next presidium as much time as possible to prepare for the 2021 Olympics.
