Last year, there were 6.3 percent less births than the year before while the number of deaths remained steady, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Monday, quoting preliminary data.
In 2010, there were 90,350 births and 130,450 deaths, the KSH said.
For every 1,000 people there were 9 live births compared to 13 deaths, the former 0.06 of a percentage point lower than the previous year.
The number of marriages declined by 1,210, or 3.3 percent, in the same period.
The population at the end of last year stood at 9,986,000 - the indigenous population declined by 40,100, an extra 6,128 people compared to the year before, the KSH said. Taking into account the positive effects of immigration, the actual population shrinkage was just 28,000 people, it added.
