A body was found under a burnt-out car wreck during the technical rescue of a mass traffic accident on the M1 motorway, the Budapest Police Headquarters said on police.hu Saturday night.

According to the police statement, the deceased was found during the removal of the car wreckage.

According to the police, five trucks and 37 passenger cars collided on the M1 motorway at km 26 near Herceghalom, east of Budapest, on the outbound side from the capital. According to primary data, 19 of the five trucks and 37 cars involved in the accident were burnt out.

Four helicopters and 16 ambulances arrived on the scene and 39 people were taken to hospitals in four municipalities – Győr, Tatabánya, Székesfehérvár and Budapest. Ten children were injured in the accident, four of them seriously and six of them slightly, and 29 adults, ten of them seriously and nineteen of them slightly, Pál Győrfi, spokesman for the National Ambulance Service, told MTI earlier.

The Hungarian Concessionary Infrastructure Development Company (MKIF) Plc. said on its social media page that the accident could have been caused by a localized dust blowing, which caused a sudden decrease in visibility.

The MKIF pointed out that the circumstances of the accident meant that it would take longer than usual to remove the wreckage. In addition, the mud created by the blowing of dust and the extinguishing of burning vehicles makes clean-up difficult.
