Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony inaugurated a memorial mark on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust on Boráros Square.
The commemorative mark bears the names of the victims of the internment camp established on Csepel Island on the River Danube in the spring of 1944.
The event featured a recitation by the actor Géza D. Hegedüs and speeches by János Schiffer, President of the National Association of Persons Persecuted by the Nazis and Tamás Mester, President of the Jewish Community of Budapest. The memorial mark was created by sculptor Tamás Varga.
Since 2001, in accordance with a decision of the Hungarian Parliament in 2000, the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust in Hungary has been celebrated every year on April 16, in memory of the day in 1944 when the ghettoisation of Hungarian Jews began.
