A weekend charity campaign organized by the Hungarian Food Bank Association has resulted in food donations worth HUF 505 million. The distribution of donations will begin on Tuesday, the association told MTI.
As they point out, the Food Bank kicked off the holiday charity season with the most successful food drive in the country's history. From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, a total of 8,800 volunteers at 473 stores in five chains accepted donations from shoppers, which will be used to make the holidays brighter for people in need.
During the three-day campaign, a total of 479 tons of non-perishable food was collected, enough to put together 95,811 food packages for people and families in need.
The announcement quotes András Nagygyörgy, the Food Bank's director of external relations, who said that according to their estimates, more than 200,000 people contributed food to the joint effort.
"We can't really find the words to describe this incredible show of solidarity, but this joint effort isn't about words. Rather, it is about the countless small, selfless acts that, when added together, can make the holiday season easier for hundreds of thousands of our compatriots who are facing difficult circumstances," he emphasized, thanking the donors, volunteers, supermarket chain employees and those who deliver the packages.
The donations are delivered to residents of children's homes, elderly care facilities, homeless and disabled people, as well as large families and single-parent households.
