Conscious Planning Makes Christmas Truly Stress-free

The majority of the population considers it important to prepare in advance for Christmas expenses, according to a recent survey by Provident Financial Ltd. However, the research also points out that many people are only able to set aside money for holiday expenses on an ad hoc basis.

The Christmas season is particularly important in terms of financial awareness: forward planning and rationalizing expenses can go a long way toward ensuring that the holidays are truly about intimacy and family togetherness.

The survey highlights that Hungarian households place great emphasis on consciously preparing for extra expenses at the end of the year. However, the research also shows that many people are only able to set aside smaller or larger amounts for the holidays from time to time.

The latest Provident Barometer survey reveals that around two-thirds of the population consider it important to set aside money for Christmas expenses during the year. According to the representative survey conducted by Ipsos Plc., 12% of respondents save a certain amount each month for this purpose, while 28% are able to increase their holiday budget on an ad hoc basis. Another 28% say that although it would be reasonable to save for this purpose, they are unable to do so due to everyday expenses, unexpected costs, or other financial challenges. Only 24% say that no financial preparation is necessary.

Last-minute loans are not typical when it comes to securing financial resources for holiday preparations. Provident Financial Ltd. monitors the development of seasonal loan applications. According to the financial institution's data, there is no significant increase in demand during the Christmas period. Based on data from 2024, the number of loan applications submitted in November and December did not significantly exceed the average monthly volume; in fact, the total figure for December showed a 9% decrease compared to the previous month. In contrast, in January 2025, 10% more customers applied for loans from the financial institution.

Although there is no universal recipe for planning holiday expenses, small, pre-planned steps can make a significant difference in how people experience this period. With conscious preparation, Christmas can be stress-free and rich in experiences for every family.
