Researchers at the Budapest University of Economics (BGE) have developed a scientifically based ecological footprint calculator for businesses.
The application supports sustainability decisions with an easy-to-understand metric and shows user companies in which areas they can achieve the greatest impact and where their environmental impact is most significant, the university says on its website.
With this information, it is also easier to set development goals, which is important not only from a sustainability perspective, as energy consumption, transportation, resource management, and waste generation also influence competitiveness – the company explained in justifying the creation of the tool.
According to the announcement, the BGE calculator is the result of several years of research, with testing having begun in 2019. Its operation is unique in the world in that it is based on the specific characteristics of Hungarian micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, quantifying their environmental impact based on their accounting and operational data. Simple, low-cost measures can help reduce this impact; operating costs can also be lowered through more conscious energy use, route optimization, or digitization, the announcement emphasized.
Participants in the Budapest Global Corporate Climate Sprint can use the app for free; BGE is supporting the program, which runs through November, as a technical partner. The registration portal can be found on the website of the Budapest Global innovation platform, which was established in 2021 at the initiative of the Budapest municipal government.
