Hungary's first humanitarian aid package to earthquake-hit Venezuela has arrived in Caracas, Hungarian health minister Zsolt Hegedűs said on social media on Tuesday.
The minister noted that over 5,000 people are known to have died in two quakes, measuring 7,2 and 7,5 on the Richter scale, on June 24, while over 16,000 people were injured. There was no information about up to 50,000, and nearly 18,000 lost their homes.
Hungary has sent 42 pallets of health care equipment and medicines, the minister said, adding that the donation was part of an European Union initiative coordinated with the Venezuelan government. Therefore, the first humanitarian aid shipment provided by the Hungarian people was delivered to the population of the disaster-stricken country also in coordination with the Venezuelan government.
The Hungarian government will continue its aid by sending medical technology and protective gear, and by forwarding donations offered by Hungarian civil organisations, Zsolt Hegedűs added.
