The Hungarian government decided last week to launch a HUF 3,500bn, ten-year railway development plan, Prime Minister Péter Magyar said at a press conference this Wednesday.
The prime minister stated that the development of the Hungarian railway system is not merely a matter of transportation, but one of national strategy and economic development; among other things, it determines the competitiveness of the country and its rural regions, the mobility of the workforce, the economic performance of the entire country, as well as Hungary’s international opportunities and relations.
He added that they would like to see railway development become a national priority, since the periods of greatest progress in the country’s history have always been those when railway development was implemented as a “nation-building program.”
The aim of the Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan (named after the 19th century Hungarian politician who devoted himself especially to the development of the national railways) is to significantly reduce the average age of the rolling stock, speed up mainline service, expand the ratio of the electrified network, make regional rail service more reliable, and establish modern, passenger-centered services.
The program will have six interrelated priorities: ensuring competitive access to every county seat, establishing a reliable regional network, creating a strong commuter rail system, partnering with Budapest, developing rail freight transport, and enhancing international connections, which includes strengthening regional cooperation, the prime minister said.
