Recirquel Circus Company Returns to Sziget

The Recirquel circus company is returning to the Sziget Festival this year with a new large-scale production created for the event where its international success story began 14 years ago. Their show, Liberty Love Rave, will run five times between August 11 and 15 on the Le Grand Theater stage.

Speaking at a press rehearsal on Thursday, Bence Vági, the company's artistic director and the show's director, noted that Recirquel debuted its first production at Sziget's Magic Mirror venue in 2012. Now, once again at the festival's invitation, they have created an exclusive performance for Sziget. He noted that over the past 14 years, the company has staged more than 2,250 performances in 28 countries, with its membership now exceeding 80.

Bence Vági said the new production "is built on Sziget's spirit of freedom." The goal was to create an immersive experience where the 1,500-capacity audience and the stage almost become one, with the crowd gradually becoming part of a rave party. Alongside movement art, the show offers a musical experience defined by electronic music and DJ sets, he noted.

The creative team drew inspiration from 1980s rave culture, which symbolized communal experience, the disappearance of social divides, and freedom, he said. The narrative follows the stages of a rave night, from arrival through the flow state to a transcendent collective release.

The production is the result of broad artistic collaboration, Vagi said. It features 30 dancers, 10 acrobats and drag performer Valerie Divine, who acts as master of ceremonies, guiding the audience through the performance. It also includes Cyr wheels, aerial acts, juggling, hand balancing and folk dance-inspired choreography.
