Japanese car maker Suzuki is set to invest HUF 76 billion into manufacturing of electric vehicles and battery packs at its base in Esztergom, the Hungarian Minister for Economy and Energy István Kapitány said in a social media post on Friday.
The minister noted that, along with Prime Minister Péter Magyar, he met Toshihiro Suzuki, the chairman-CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, in Budapest on Thursday, also discussing the company's plans in Hungary.
Suzuki's base in Esztergom, NW of Budapest, employs around 2,800 workers and exports close to 90% of its output, István Kapitány said.
The government wants the HUF 76 billion investment to bring more Hungarian suppliers, more Hungarian engineers, more research and development and closer university cooperation, while fully complying with environmental protection regulations, he added.
The minister asserted that "Hungary does not simply want assembly plants, but knowledge, technology and higher Hungarian added value."
In May, Magyar Suzuki reported that the Esztergom plant turned out 108,072 cars last year.
A HUF 9 billion production upgrade and energy efficiency investment was completed by the summer of 2025, expanding capacity at the bumper, painting and welding plants. The project was supported by a HUF 1.9 billion grant by the Hungarian state.
