European Union funding is supporting resurfacing and repair projects on 324 kilometers of Hungarian roads in 2026, close to 57% of the total 570 kilometers undergoing maintenance, Transportation and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy said in a post on social media on Tuesday.

Some HUF 149 billion is being spent on the projects, including HUF 58 billion in EU funding, the minister stated. Most of the 210 projects involve stretches of just a few kilometres, but include the renovation of kerbs and culverts, and the replacement of guardrails and signage, in addition to road resurfacing, he added.

Dávid Vitézy called out the former government for putting the funding focus on a few priority projects and motorway concessions, at the cost of upkeep for primary and secondary roads.

According to the minister, most of the projects involve road sections just a few kilometers long. He emphasized that while a 2- to 3-kilometer road renovation may not seem like a project of national significance, for the people living there — who have been waiting for it for decades — it certainly is.

“We are not considering road construction projects that are merely for show. We are developing a nationwide road renovation program that can be planned several years in advance, one that will draw not only on domestic funds but also on European Union funds secured for Hungary, so that it is not just a few select road sections but the entire national road network that is gradually brought up to a better standard,” Dávid Vitézy said
