August Hungarian Trade Deficit at EUR 481 Mn

Hungary had a EUR 481 million trade deficit in August, after months of surpluses, data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Wednesday show.

Exports rose 15.8% year-on-year to EUR 12.044 billion. Imports climbed 28.6% to EUR 12.525 billion.

Hungary's energy trade deficit reached EUR 691 million in August, widening from EUR 578 million in the previous month, while the surplus in trade of machinery and transportation equipment fell to EUR 564 million from EUR 1.526 billion. The deficit in trade of manufactured goods narrowed to EUR 589 million from EUR 707 million and the surplus of trade in food, drinks and tobacco products edged up to EUR 216 million from EUR 205 million.

Trade with other European Union member states accounted for 75% of Hungary's exports and 65% of its imports during the month.

Hungary's export volume to the rest of the world decreased 1.8%, while import volume from those countries rose 24%. Hungary's trade deficit with non-EU countries widened to EUR 1.260 billion.

Hungary's terms of trade improved 1.8% during the period as the forint strengthened 8.3% against the euro and 7.9% against the dollar.

For January-August, Hungary had a trade surplus of EUR 4.880 billion. Exports increased 9.3% to EUR 107.279 billion and imports rose 12.4% to EUR 102.399 billion.
