The 16th Francophone Film Days in Budapest will be held from March 4 to 14 with a number of accompanying programs; Nadia Melliti, who won the Best Actress award at last year's Cannes Film Festival, and the program's patron, Hungarian film director Ildikó Enyedi, will also participate in the event.
Organized by the French Institute, 23 contemporary Francophone works will be screened in their original language, with Hungarian subtitles, at the Uránia National Film Theater and the French Institute, the latter informed MTI.
On March 5, Richard Linklater's film 'New Wave' will be screened at the French Institute, which evokes the story of the filming of the classic 1960 French movie 'Breathless' in a period style. Film aesthete György Báron will give a film history introduction before the screening.
An Ildikó Enyedi marathon will be held on March 7th: 'Simon mágua" [Simon, the Magician'], then 'The Story of My Wife' - the latter starring Léa Seydoux - and finally 'The Silent Friend' will be screened. After the screening, an audience meeting will be held with the director, who, according to the announcement, emphasized that France's commitment to European values is important to her.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, on March 8th, a roundtable discussion titled 'Women, Media and Film' will be organized at the French Institute with the participation of producer Eléonore Masson, cinematographer Eszter Csepeli and Réka Sáfrány, president of the Hungarian Women's Lobby. The participants will discuss inequalities affecting women, the effects of media concentration, and the importance of authentic diversity.
On March 14, Hafsia Herzi's film 'La petite dernière' ['The little sister'], which won the Queer Palm at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, will also be screened at the French Institute. The film is an adaptation of Fatima Daas's coming-of-age novel. After the screening, the audience can meet the main character, Nadia Melliti.
The program series will continue in 17 rural cities towns between March 15 and 28. On March 17, Laurence Cossé, the author of the book on which the film is based, will participate in the screening of 'L'Inconnu de la Grande Arche' 'The Great Arch''A Danish Architect in Paris' at the Apolló Cinema in Debrecen, E Hungary. According to the story of the movie, former President François Mitterrand wanted to build a new architectural symbol in Paris for the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution; the international competition was won by the Danish Otto von Spreckelsen with his modern triumphal arch design.
