The László Bíró Award, named after the the Hungarian-born inventor of the first commercially successful ballpoint pen, has been awarded this year to Lídia Demján. The award recognizes people who have made a substantive and key contribution to promoting relations between Hungary and Argentina in the field of culture.
At the award ceremony held this month in the Delegation Hall of Hungarian Parliament, the Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to Hungary, María Lorena Capra noted in her speech that "the László Bíró Award represents the most important distinction granted by our Embassy. It bears the name of one of the most illustrious and renowned Hungarian-Argentine citizens, the brilliant and prolific inventor and artist who settled in Buenos Aires in 1942. In Argentina, László Bíró founded a family and had a daughter, Marianna, who has lovingly kept her father’s immeasurable legacy alive."
She highlighted that "the award we present today to Lídia is an expression of our admiration and respect for her and for her tireless work, which has been of great importance to our Embassy thanks to her enthusiastic and always warm support — support that has crossed borders and united hearts."
She added that Lídia Demján's passion for tango has made Argentina a part of her life. "Her personal devotion was followed by concrete actions for the development of tango culture in Hungary, contributing to its exponential growth in recent years, both in numbers and in enthusiasm. Lídia’s passion for the expression of Argentine music and dance has built — and continues to build — lasting bonds between our two countries."
