Grandson of Ottoman Sultan dies

Mediha ªükriye Martinez, the wife of the previous Mexican ambassador to Hungary, José Luis Martínez Hernández, mourns the death of her father, Osman Nami Osmanoglu, the grandson of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamit II.

Osman Nami Osmanoglu died on July 15 in Istanbul, Turkey at the age of 93. He had been receiving medical treatment in the intensive care unit of the hospital for heart failure since June 10.

He was the last surviving grandchild of the sultan who reigned the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1909. His funeral also took place in Istanbul and he was laid to rest in the Mausoleum of Sultan Mahmut II where his grandfather, Abdulhamit II is also buried. Apart from family members, his funeral was also attended by Turkish dignitaries including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1918 as the son of Sultan Abdulhamit's daughter Ayse Sultan, Osmanoglu spent 50 years in foreign countries and dealt with art and painting. He returned to Turkey in 1974.
