Intermodal traffic in Hungary rose 114% in 2025, the Association of Hungarian Logistics Service Centers (MLSZKSZ) told MTI.
According to the association, this clearly shows that Hungary’s role in regional logistics has strengthened; however, the condition of the railway infrastructure and track closure restrictions that hinder traffic are increasingly becoming the biggest obstacles to further growth. Unpredictable rail operations, additional costs and declining reliability are already directly undermining the sector’s competitiveness.
In its statement, the MLSZKSZ details that, according to its 2025 assessment, the growth of intermodal traffic in Hungary was outstanding even by European standards. The number of loaded containers rose by 6.51% to 502,037 TEU, while empty container traffic increased by 15.21% to 237,010 TEU, while semi-trailer traffic grew by 81.22% to reach 101,164 TEU.
They explained that the growth was driven partly by shipments related to major industrial investments and partly by the strengthening of e-commerce and international trade. A significant development is that the role of Hungarian terminals as regional distribution hubs, which emerged in 2024, further strengthened in 2025, primarily toward Romania and Serbia. This process represents a long-awaited breakthrough for the domestic logistics sector.
