A study of the operation of the multi-product bio-refinery operator Pannonia Bio in the past five years shows that in 2019 alone, the company's activities contributed to Hungary's GDP by around EUR 712 million while supporting the maintenance of 2,580 jobs.

The economic impact study prepared by the HÉTFA Research Institute also says that the Pannonia Bio generated nearly EUR 220 million in tax revenue for local and central budgets and every liter of ethanol produced by the company in 2019 resulted in GDP growth of more than EUR 1 for Hungary.

Although the study did not examine the environmental impact of the extensive activities carried out by Pannonia Bio, it can be said that the ethanol produced by the company can save 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually when used in the transport sector. Pannonia Bio is currently working on the implementation of a multi-annual (2019-2021) development investment plan, under which it will invest more than EUR 150 million in renewable energy, energy efficiency development, biogas and the crop enhancers and feed sectors.

About 80% percent of the ethanol produced by Pannonia Bio is used to protect against COVID-19. This is enough to provide 100 ml of hand sanitizer per person per month for all citizens of the European Union (460 million people). “Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, we feel it is our social duty to make donations to help the work of local communities, nearby industrial facilities, and healthcare facilities, using available resources. Our company is constantly exploring other areas where it can help with anti-epidemic measures,” Ferenc Hódos, Strategic Director at Pannonia Bio Co. Ltd. said.

Pannonia Bio is an Irish-owned company that produces sustainable organic products from cereals at its bio-refinery in Dunaföldvár, south of Budapest. In 2019, the company processed more than 1.2 million tons of domestic corn and produced more than 500 million liters of ethanol, more than 300,000 tons of GMO-free high-protein animal feed and about 10,000 tons of corn oil. Pannonia Bio's products are exported to more than thirty countries in Europe and worldwide.
