The financial news site portfolio.hu calculated from data published by the Central Statistical Office that in April, 425,000 people in Hungary considered themselves unemployed, which is an increase of 140,000 compared to the period before the coronavirus crisis.
Some of them will be able to return to work in the next period because they were unable to work due to restrictive measures. According to the news site, however, it is obvious that the number of unemployed will exceed the previous level by the end of the coronavirus crisis.
The data show that it is in and around where most workers lost their jobs (14.8%) –almost eight times as many as a year earlier. Employees on the Northern Great Plain were the least affected (8.9%) in this respect.
In March and April 2020, about 140,000 people lost their jobs, the vast majority of them for reasons related to the coronavirus epidemic. They mostly worked in the fields of tourism and hospitality.
