The 26th Miskolc Rally car race was halted and then canceled this Saturday morning in NE Hungary following an accident in which 48-year-old co-pilot Zsolt Tóth lost his life.
The driver of the Rally1 category car, Gergely Dudás was not seriously injured, but was treated by paramedics. Following proposals from officials and competitors, the supervisory board decided that the event would not continue.
Fellow co-pilot Dániel Holczer was quoted by the Hungarian news agency MTI by saying that a terrible tragedy had occurred, which is very rare but does happen. "We are racing with the safest cars in the world, I have to say that under decent conditions, with a safety plan, safety requirements that have been met and complied with, that can happen once in a hundred thousand cases, but unfortunately, there is no guarantee to avoid such an accident."
