The Mexican Embassy in Budapest held a commemorative ceremony on the occasion of the 210th anniversary of the start of the Mexican War of Independence.

The celebration in the garden of the Embassy began with the ceremonial hoisting of the country's flag, which was followed by a minute of silence in the memory of Mexicans and Hungarians who fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his short speech, the Mexican ambassador to Hungary, David Nájera also spoke about the hardships people in his country must go through during this epidemic. He waved the national flag and shouted out a call of patriotism (Grito de Independencia) based on the Cry of Dolores, the call out made two centuries ago by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla that started the war for independence.

The event also included some Mexican songs was performed by the band of the Hungarian Military. The official program - followed by a small reception of Mexican food and drinks - ended with the Mexican national anthem sung by the soprano Estefanía Avilés.
