Some 53 percent of Hungarians spent less on Christmas preparations this year than last year and only 7 percent said they had spent a significant amount, a survey by Nezopont Institute released on Wednesday shows.
Every eight out of ten respondents said they were spending under 30,000 forints (EUR 110) on Christmas this year.
Nezopont said Hungarians's debts had increased considerably during the economic crisis and many had bad experiences with comsumer loans.
Strong family relations in Hungary are reflected by the fact that 64 percent of respondents said they would celebrate with close family members and 16 percent said a larger group of relatives would be involved in the celebration traditionally held in the evening of December 24.
Some 7 percent said they would spend Christmas Eve alone, including 9 percent of women and 4 percent of men. A total of 3 percent of people said they would be working on Christmas Eve.
