Three-time Olympic champion waterpolo player, the holder of the ‘Athlete of the Nation’ title in Hungary, Dezsõ Gyarmati passed away at the age of 85 in Budapest. He was the most successful figure in the history of waterpolo.
Dezsõ Gyarmati was the only waterpolo player to have participated at five Olympic Games, what’s more, he won a medal at each of them: gold in Helsinki (1952), Melbourne (1956) and Tokyo (1964); silver in London (1948) and bronze in Rome (1960).
He also won two European championship titles with Hungarian national side for which he was capped 108 times and he also had eight Hungarian championship titles to his belt.
