Andy Grove, one of the key figures in Intel rising to become a large, worldwide-known international technology company, has died in Los Altos, California at the age of 79, Intel announced this Tuesday. He was born in Budapest on September 2, 1936 as András István Gróf.
András Gróf studied chemistry at university in Budapest but fled Hungary after the suppression of the 1956 uprising against the Stalinist regime. He continued his tudies in the United States. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in New York, Grove went to California, where he earned a PhD in 1963 from the University of California.
In 1968, he was the Co-foundr of Intel Corporation that grew to be the world's largest semiconductor producer with Grove playing an important part in this success. He was Intel's CEO between 1987 and 1998.
