The data published Monday morning are a little better than a week ago, but they are only a sign that the fourth wave is slowly coming to an end. In the past three days, nearly 40,000 people have received their third vaccine in Hungary, and there were almost 18,000 more who have just had their first shot, the news site hvg.hu reports.

There have been 366 new victims of the coronavirus, according to the official epidemiological information website, which reported the combined figures for Friday and the weekend. Including them, 37,896 people died of complications of the virus in Hungary. This is one of the highest numbers per population in the world.

In the last three days, 10,105 new cases were diagnosed, far fewer than the 16,017 diagnosed the previous weekend, but still a positive test rate of 15%, nowhere near the 5% level below which the World Health Organisation says it is possible to say that a realistic picture of the spread of the epidemic is being obtained.

There are 5,537 patients with coronavirus in hospital, 319 fewer than on Friday. Of those, 503 are on ventilators, according to official figures, 16 fewer than on Friday.

In the last three days, 17,969 people have received their first vaccination, bringing the total to 6,226,399. The second vaccination was given to 14,021 people on Friday and over the weekend, and the third to 38,844, bringing the total to 3,104,194 Hungarians who have received all three jabs.
