Policeman shot dead in NW Hungary

A policeman was shot dead in north-western Hungarian village of Bõny on Wednesday, The Hungarian news agency MTI was told that the suspect in the case, a 74-year-old man, was being treated at a hospital in the nearby city of Gyõr.

MTI’s correspondent at the scene saw several dozen police officers and counter-terrorism (TEK) personnel surrounding a house. The news agency contacted the county police headquarters and the TEK but both declined to comment.

According to press reports, the male suspect is the founder of a far-right organisation. It is reported that he received a suspended prison sentence in the 1990s for spreading Nazi-type propaganda. Police had sought to carry out a search of his property because it was suspected that he had kept illegal firearms, according to reports.
