András Törőcsik, the legendary footballer of the renowned Budapest soccer team Újpest Dózsa and that of the the Hungarian national team, passed away this Saturday at the age of 67.
Born on May 1, 1955, he joined in 1974 one of the top teams of the time, Újpest Dózsa, a club associated with the Ministry of Interior in the then Communist regime.
He won three Hungarian championship titles and was also a three times cup winner. He was already one of Europe's best players – as exemplified by the Ballon d'Or vote and the many accolades he received from the English and French press before and after the World Cup in Argentina – when he suffered a serious hip injury in a road accident. In the early eighties, he was back at his best with the Roses, less in a finishing role and more in a preparatory role.
He made 45 appearances for the Hungarian national team, played in two World Cups (1978 and 1982) and scored a total of 12 goals for the national team, becoming a symbol of Hungarian football.
After his injury, he continued to have fantastic games in the 1980s, with Újpest Dózsa in the 1983-1984 season, when he again reached the peak of his career in matches of the European Cup Winners Cup.
