Solar Power Plants Reach Peak Production in Hungary

The aggregate production of solar power plants in Hungary exceeded 1,836 megawatts (MW) on Wednesday, 13 July, according to the Hungarian Independent Transmission Operator Co. Ltd. (Mavir).

This means that large solar power plants accounted for almost 37% of total electricity consumption in Hungary. This is particularly important in the current energy emergency, as alternative energy sources also contribute to securing the country's energy supply, the state news agency MTI reports, referring to information by the Ministry of Technology and Industry (TIM).

According to TIM, solar energy's take-off is demonstrated by the fact that the capacity of solar panels has increased tenfold in five years, and in 2021, the amount of electricity generated by solar power plants increased by 56.54% compared to the previous year, making solar power the largest share of total electricity generation in the European Union, at 11.1%.

"Hungary currently has a total of more than 3,000 megawatts of solar capacity, and development has accelerated to the point where the solar capacity planned for 2030 could be reached by the middle of the decade," TIM said in a statement.
