Mexican National Day Celebration in Budapest

Members of the diplomatic community in Hungary, Mexicans living in the country and other guests gathered at the residence of the Mexican Ambassador in the Buda Hills in the Hungarian capital this Saturday afternoon to celebrate Mexico's national day at the invitation of Ambassador Rosario Molinero.

It was 212 years ago, on September 16, 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a local priest, celebrated a mass during which he gave the Cry of Dolores ('Grito de Dolores'), a speech calling upon the people to protect the interest of their King Ferdinand VII by revolting against the European-born Spaniards. He is recognized as the leader of the Mexican War of Independence (1810-21) and as the 'Father of the Nation'.

Just like once Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla did, the Mexican Ambassador to Hungary, Rosario Molinero called out at Saturday's event the names of the fallen heroes who died during the War of Independence and ended her speech by shouting Viva Mexico! three times – followed by a 'Viva Hungría' and another 'Viva Mexico.'

The event also included Mexican dance performances while the guests had the opportunity to taste typical Mexican dishes and drinks.
