According to preliminary data from DataHouse, 72,300 cars changed hands in March, up 12% from 64,600 in February. For the first time since August, the number of domestic transfers exceeded the 70,000 level, the trading portal JóAutók.hu said in a statement.

The statement points out that 204,631 passenger cars changed hands on the used car market in the first three months of this year, which is about 6% less than the 217,181 registered in the same period last year. The number of new cars registered was 29,561, up 3% from 28,688 a year earlier.

In March, 11,500 new cars with Hungarian registration plates were registered, allowing second-hand imports to recover from the low point at the end of last year, JóAutók.hu says.

According to the dealership portal, it is usually lower-middle class cars and small cars that change hands on the Hungarian used car market, with the former accounting for 29% and the latter 22% of the total in the first three months of the year.

Opel Astra, Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf are the most popular models in the lower-midsize segment, while the Suzuki Swift tops the small car list, followed by the Opel Corsa and Volkswagen Polo. Among the top ten most popular models, the upper midsize category is represented by the Volkswagen Passat, the BMW 3 Series and the Skoda Octavia, the statement said.
