Two new pig farms by Danish-owned FirstFarms Hungary Ltd. were inaugurated on Friday in Telekgerendás and Pusztaföldvár, both in Békés county, SE Hungary.

Over 30% of the HUF eight billion investment cost was covered by Hungarian taxpayers through a government decision on state aid. The investment will create 20-30 new jobs in the region.

The investment, which was completed in 14 months, saw the construction of a 2,000-breeding sow nursery in Telekgerendás; and a piglet rearing facility for breeding sows in Pusztaföldvár, which will allow the breeding of 4,500 sows.

On the two sites, a complex of buildings with a surface area of some 18,500 sqms was constructed, for which 1,750 trucks of concrete were laid. The buildings are powered by solar panels, and the optimum temperature is maintained using heat recovered from slurry, a technology that is unique in Hungary.

FirstFarms Group CEO Anders Norgaard said that this is the biggest investment in the company's history, with the first piglets arriving at the fattening farm in the first week of May. He expressed his gratitude for the state support of HUF 2.5 billion.

Tamás Sarusi-Kis, managing director of FirstFarms Hungary Ltd., pointed out that with the investment, their production capacity has practically doubled. He added that the foundation stone of the investment was laid on February 24, 2022, the day the Russian-Ukrainian war broke out, which rewrote the prices of raw materials on the market. Despite this, construction was completed in 14 months.

He recalled that the company has been in existence since 2002, with two plants in Gádoros. There, they have 2,500 sow places, from where the piglets weighing 7 kg are transported to the Orosháza plant, where they are reared to 30 kg.
