Hungary’s Most Successful Wineries in 2022

The biggest Hungarian wineries had a varied year in 2022. Among the best performers were Varga Winery, St. Andrea (Attila Gere's interest), but Kreinbacher also soared and Bock Winery cannot complain, according to a summary by Management Forum (Mfor).

In 2022, the weather and drought have significantly reduced the overall volume of grapes produced, but winemakers expect last year's vintage to be a very good year.

In the Villány wine region, the 9-men Weninger & Gere Ltd., which bears the name of Attila Gere, had a great year. With a turnover of EUR 308 million, the company made a profit of EUR 32 million, 16 times the previous year's figure. This was by far the best result in the last five years. Interestingly, the company now not only produces red wine, but also electricity, which generated revenues of HUF 40 million.

The 18-strong Bock Cellar can't complain either, with the 2021 loss now a thing of the past. The Bock has produced their best figures for the last five years, with a profit of EUR 136.4 million on revenues of EUR 362 million. This was certainly helped by the inauguration last June of the major development of the Bock Winery, which has been running since 2019 and was co-financed by the European Union and the European Regional and Development Fund with HUF 650.10 million in non-repayable grants and HUF 667.67 million in loans, plus almost 25% of the own contribution, on an area of more than 3,700 square meters. The new plant will produce healthy food and lyophilized – cold-dried – fruit products from Villány grape juice.

The year 2022 also turned out to be a good one for the 24-strong St. Andrea Grape, Wine Growing and Sales Ltd. in the wine region of Eger and its surroundings. The year 2021 was well outperformed, producing the top figures of the last five years, with a turnover of HUF 700 million and a profit of HUF 158 million.

Kreinbacher Birtok and Pezsgőpincészet, a 41-strong winery operating in the Somló wine region, also outperformed all its previous sales, although its HUF 1.3 billion profit turned into HUF 289.8 million, a little down on 2021.
