U.S. and Hungarian Victories at the Spar Budapest Marathon

Hungary’s Eszter Barabás won the women's and Mitchell Baum of the United States the men's race at the 38th Spar Budapest Marathon this Sunday.

According to the organizers, the Budapest Sports Office, some 23,000 people from 96 countries and more than 1,000 Hungarian towns and villages came to the two-day event, which started at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Participants included 73-year-old Swedish Jan Paraniak and Slovakian Eva Seidlova, celebrating her 75th birthday, who have completed more than 1,000 marathons among them.

The longest distance was won virtually start-to-finish by Mitchell Baum, who crossed the finish line in 2 hours: 24 minutes and 36 seconds, with Hungary’s Krisztián Zoltán Vigh (2:27:30) second and the latter’s compatriot, Péter Simon (2:32:34) coming in third.

In the women's race, local runner Eszter Barabás was fastest with a time of 2:54:17, ahead of Germany’s Pia von Keutz (2:54:29) and Hungary’s Ágnes Szonja Garai (2:58:32).
