Orbán and Zelensky bilateral talks on the horizon

In a potentially groundbreaking move, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has accepted an invitation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a future bilateral meeting. This would mark a significant development in their strained relationship since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Announcing the acceptance during an annual international news conference in Budapest, Orbán revealed that the invitation was extended during a brief conversation with Zelenskyy at the swearing-in ceremony for Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, on December 10. Orbán recounted, "(Zelenskyy) said, 'We should negotiate,' and I told him I'd be at his disposal. We just have to clarify one question: about what?" The Ukrainian leader specifically sought a discussion on Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union.

Tense relations
The relationship between Orbán and Zelenskyy has been tense, exacerbated by Hungary's repeated blocking of EU financial aid to Ukraine and its refusal to provide arms support amidst Ukraine’s armed conflict with Russia.
Orbán has staunchly opposed Ukraine's EU membership path, distinguishing himself as one of the few EU leaders who have not officially visited Kyiv amid the conflict with Russia.
Earlier this month, despite Hungary's opposition, all EU states, except Hungary, agreed to initiate accession talks with Ukraine. The decision was made in Orbán's absence, as he left the room during the crucial moment. However, the resistance persists in overhauling the EU budget to allocate 50 billion euros to Kyiv. An emergency summit on February 1 is expected to address this challenge, with Orbán advocating for funding from sources outside the EU budget.
Ukraine's Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, mentioned a "productive phone call" with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjárto, expressing efforts to organize a meeting between the two leaders in the near future. Yermak highlighted discussions on Ukraine's progress toward European integration.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a constructive meeting to address the challenges in their relations. Orbán later confirmed his acceptance of the invitation, raising hopes for a thaw in the strained diplomatic ties between Hungary and Ukraine.
