A summer party on May 1 in the open-air museum (‘Skanzen’) in Szentendre, north of Budapest, will evoke the atmosphere of the turn-of-the-century Mayfests.

The museum will evoke the atmosphere of the turn-of-the-century Mayfests in the Transylvanian building complex, with a painting school and a picnic, as well as a maypole, kite making and a dance performance, according to a statement sent by the organizers to MTI.

Mayfests were held in groves, wooded areas and large parks in towns across Transylvania at the turn of the century. In the morning and early afternoon, people of the time usually spent time with children's games and games of skill, in the afternoon they took part in musical programs, and in the evening the adults' dance party closed the day. Games, music, food and fun in the open air were a constant feature.

This year, the atmosphere of the 1910s Mayfests will be recreated in the Skanzen. There will be a painting school in the main square of Transylvania Town, music in the café and a park where you can try out the means of transport of the turn of the century.

In the Dressing Room, visitors can dress up in period costumes and make hats, bracelets or brooches in the craft workshops.

There will also be themed walks to explore beauty and fashion as well as love, a dumplings cooking session with personal messages at the Balavásár door, a love fortune-telling session, a puppet show for children and a giant bubble-blowing session. The Maypole and green branch decorations will be part of the spring celebrations, and a picnic will be held in Elizabeth Grove.
