Hungary's Population Continues to Shrink

Preliminary data show the number of births falling by 2.9% in March compared with the same month of the previous year, while deaths declined by 9.2%, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Thursday. Marriages increased by 15%, it added.

Fully 5,752 children were born in March and 10,393 people died, while the natural decrease in the population was 4,641 people, compared with 5,529 in March 2025, the KSH said.

Altogether 3,401 couples tied the knot in March, up 15% compared with the same month the previous year.

Fully 17,367 children were born in the first three months of 2026, 3.5% fewer than in the same period of the previous year, while 32,899 people died, 7.5% fewer than a year earlier.

The natural decrease in the population was 15,532 people, down 12% on the previous year.

In Jan-March, 7,951 couples got married, up 20% year on year.
