The Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark, in the border region between Hungary and Slovakia, has won EUR 3,951,000 in funding from the European Union's INTERREG program for supporting territorial cooperation, the managing director of the Nógrád Development Agency, Lilla Körmendy told MTI on Monday.

She said the proposed UNESCO site, the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark and its surrounding area, is of outstanding importance to the Hungarian-Slovak border region, and the project contributes to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, while strengthening sustainable tourism, competitiveness, the local economy, and relations between the two countries.

Lilla Körmendy added that the funding would support the construction of a narrow-gauge railway at a mining museum in Salgótarján, the expansion of an earthquake simulator in Ipolytarnóc and the renovation of a hiking path that starts in Nagylóc.

The first developments will finish in 2028 and the last will be completed by July 2029.

The projects aim to boost visitor numbers, increase the length of stays and extend the season for travel, Lilla Körmendy said.
