The American Hungarian Foundation (AHF) has recognized Nobel laureate Katalin Karikó with the George Washington Award, the University of Szeged told MTI on Wednesday.
The award was presented to Katalin Karikó at the Hungarian American Coalition's gala marking the United States' 250th anniversary.
Hungarian-American biochemist Katalin Karikó – along with American physician-scientist Drew Weissman – was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023 for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against the new coronavirus.
AHF founded the Washington Award in 1961. It is given to individuals whose life and work "embody the ideals associated with the First US President such as vision for the future, courage, honesty, and the service of and commitment to the public benefit."
