A new electricity storage system with a capacity of 3 megawatt-hours (MWh) has been built in Baja at a cost of approximately HUF 550 million, according to a statement provided to MTI by the investor, Merital Property Management Ltd.

According to the announcement, the company received a non-repayable grant of HUF 202.5 million for the project under Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, with EU funding.

The new energy storage facility complements the 1.8-megawatt AC-side solar power plant previously built in the area and is capable of storing energy generated by the solar plant in the event that grid feed-in reaches its limits. The entire system will be capable of both participating in balancing energy regulation and ensuring the stability of the balance group, the announcement noted.

Merital Asset Management Ltd. primarily intends to enter the aFRR (Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve) service market, but also considers it important to be able to cover other regulatory service markets as market conditions change.

The announcement explained that the installation of grid energy storage systems contributes to achieving domestic targets aligned with the European Union’s 2030 climate goals, as well as the climate neutrality goal set for 2050.

It promotes the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the need to generate the electricity that can be drawn from storage capacity again, and by eliminating the need to maintain regulatory capacity (spinning reserve) in continuous operation for the purpose of regulation.
