The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) issued a commemorative coin for the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK) on Wednesday.
Central bank governor Mihaly Varga acknowledged the important role MKIK plays fostering ties between business sectors and said the commemorative coin signalled commitment to professional solidarity among the business community, benefitting the whole economy.
MKIK head Elek Nagy said the Chamber was focused now on R+D+I, boosting export capacity and supporting data-driven decision-making.
According to a summary by the Hungarian Mint Ltd., The history of the chambers of commerce and industry in Hungary begins in 1850, when they were first established by royal patent. The first law on the chambers was passed in 1868, stipulating mandatory membership for all traders, craftsmen and companies. The chambers played an important role in structuring business life all the way up until World War II, when they were terminated by government decree and their assets were seized by the state.
The Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry was founded in 1948, later functioning under the name Hungarian Economic Chamber. Its role was to represent business interests and promote economic cooperation.
More than 40 years later, a new law on the chambers of commerce and industry reestablished the chambers as public bodies and once again made membership for companies mandatory. The chambers are responsible for supporting economic development, facilitating business life and representing companies’ common interests. Mandatory membership, however, was abolished by the new law that entered into effect in 2000, and the chambers thus now operate on a voluntary basis.
The main task of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is now to represent companies’ economic interests, to develop economic ties and to support small and medium-sized enterprises. It plays an important role on the international stage in facilitating Hungarian firms’ activities on external markets and strengthening European business cooperation.
The front of the commemorative coin bears an image of the Hungarian coat-of-arms in an offset central field. The engrailed outer band on the front has the circular legend “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary) at the top, with the date “2026” on the right, the denomination “5000 FORINT” at the bottom, and the mint mark “BP.” on the left.
The back of the coin shows the Carpathian Basin and its surroundings in the offset central field, with Hungary’s current borders visible on the topographic map. Marked with dots on the map are the founding cities of the chambers (14 in total), showing the names of three of them at the time of founding “SOPRON”, “PEST-BUDA” and “DEBRECEN”. The master mark of the coin’s designer Balázs Bitó is located on the right side of the central field, integrated into the map. The engrailed outer ring on the back has the circular legend “MAGYAR KERESKEDELMI ÉS IPARKAMARA” (Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) at the top and the circular legend “ALAPÍTVA 1850” (Established 1850) at the bottom.
