GLS Hungary’s nationwide network expansion has reached another important milestone: the company has put its 3,000th parcel locker into operation in the southeastern Hungarian city of Szeged. The company says this development clearly illustrates the rapid transformation of the domestic parcel logistics market and the strategic direction in which GLS is continuously expanding the number of its fixed nationwide pickup points in response to customer demand.
According to PwC’s 2026 Parcel Logistics Report, the number of shipments delivered to domestic parcel lockers increased by more than 50% in the previous year, making it the fastest-growing delivery method.
The importance of expanding the network in rural areas is also symbolized by the fact that the 3,000th GLS Automata – a milestone featuring 20 columns and 236 compartments – was unveiled in Szeged, inside the Árkád Szeged shopping center. With this, the number of GLS Hungary’s automated lockers has reached 3,000, offering this service in more than 670 towns and cities; together with the parcel pickup points, nearly 4,000 GLS Pickup Points are now available nationwide in more than 820 towns and cities. The goal of the network’s continuous expansion is to provide shoppers and e-commerce partners with access to fast and convenient package pickup options in as many towns as possible.
“Consumer habits are clearly shifting toward delivery that is not only fast but also flexible, with the package’s journey easily trackable digitally. GLS’s developments respond to this market shift: we are continuously expanding our network of automated terminals and improving our digital services and we support our partners’ competitiveness with new solutions,” according to Attila Balázs, Managing Director of GLS Hungary.
A key element of the company’s development strategy is the GLS Automata Express service, launched in the summer of 2025, which is currently available in Budapest and five southern agglomeration cities in Pest County, involving nearly 600 parcel lockers (covering 20% of the total national network).
The essence of the service is the next-morning delivery of packages dropped off on the day of ordering – including on Saturdays – which offers numerous benefits for e-retailers: fast delivery, which provides a competitive advantage over imported packages entering Hungary, and an option available at no extra charge, which encourages repeat purchases. The GLS Automata Express service also had a positive impact on operations in terms of locker utilization: by noon, recipients had picked up 63% more packages from the lockers than in the period prior to the service’s launch. The company is making it possible for its e-commerce partners, following its logistics partners, to connect to up to 1,500 GLS lockers. Through this collaboration model, partners can integrate their own click & collect solutions into the GLS locker infrastructure, thereby reducing their own costs while offering their customers even more flexible pickup options. In addition, they can generate new revenue by placing the lockers in front of their stores for a rental fee and can also increase foot traffic to the store.
