Oremus Winery’s 2016 6-puttonyos Tokaji Aszú was named one of the top fifty ‘Best in Show’ wines at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), considered one of the world’s most prestigious wine competitions.

This year marked the 23rd edition of the Decanter World Wine Awards in London. This year, nearly 17,000 entries from 58 countries were submitted to the competition, which were judged by 245 wine experts, including 63 Masters of Wine and 24 Master Sommeliers, according to the Kreinbacher Estate in Somló, which won one platinum, one gold, and two silver medals at the competition, as reported to MTI.

Under the extremely strict judging rules, gold medals are awarded only to wines scoring 95 points or higher, while platinum medals are awarded to the very best gold medalists after a second tasting; this year, a total of 198 wines (97–100 points) received this honor.

Hungary once again excelled, as the prestigious jury awarded a total of 8 platinum, 15 gold, 52 silver, and 68 bronze medals to wines from Hungary.

A Hungarian wine also made it into the competition’s top fifty: the 2016 6-puttonyos Tokaji Aszú from the Oremus Winery in Tolcsva.

Among the platinum medals awarded to Hungarian wines this year, Tokaj wines are in the majority: Antalóczy, Balassa Bor (two platinum medals), Béres, Füleky, and Juliet Victor all earned this distinction. In addition to the Tokaj wines, the La Trinita red blend from Heumann Pince in Villány and the Brut Classic sparkling wine from the Kreinbacher Estate in Somló also won platinum awards.
